What I love about the Jewish Book Council

From spirited book clubs and thriving communities to deep dives into Jewish history and the joys of Jewish literature, the Jewish Book Council (JBC) has been inspiring readers since 1943.

I love how it brings people together — whether you’re an avid reader, a curious newbie, or a lifelong learner, JBC’s programs connect you with stories that resonate across the Jewish literary landscape.

With roots in a humble exhibit at the Boston Public Library, it has grown into a national hub that celebrates the absolute best of Jewish storytelling. Being part of that legacy — in homes, libraries, synagogues, and cafés — is its own form of community building.

Jewish book month

Every November leading up to Hanukkah, the Jewish Book Council (JBC) lights up our calendars with Jewish Book Month. What began as a week-long celebration in 1925 has flourished into a full month of literary excitement. Since 1943, JBC has invited readers everywhere to take part in the month-long joyful celebration of Jewish literature, finding new books by Jewish Authors and gifting their treasured discoveries during this festive season.

Another annual tradition of importance is the prestigious National Jewish Book Awards, inaugurated in 1950, which is the longest-running awards program of its kind in North America.

By showcasing English language books of Jewish interest and awarding recognition to stellar voices, fresh prominence is given to outstanding Jewish literature jewishbookcouncil.org. For readers hunting for their next compelling read, Jewish Book Month is the ultimate literary treasure trove.

Meet the authors

One of my favorite aspects of being part of the JBC circle is the chance to meet the authors whose work profoundly moves us. The Jewish Book Club Authors featured in JBC’s lineup are more than just names — they’re neighbors, community members, and storytellers who bring authenticity to these events.

Whether attending intimate Q&A’s at local book fairs, lively panels at festivals, or cozy gatherings at neighborhood cultural events, each author offers a window into their interests, inspirations, and creative process.

These animated gatherings cater to diverse interests — from historical memoirs to graphic novels, poetry to cultural commentary. Be it attending a festival in your hometown or joining a virtual chat, the opportunity to connect with the inventive minds behind well-crafted stories that shape us is always something special.

In each section — whether it’s connecting readers through book clubs, spotlighting Jewish Book Month and the National Jewish Book Awards, or celebrating the authors themselves — the Jewish Book Council nurtures not just a love for books, but a love for community, culture, and conversation. Here’s to many more chapters together!
